Let’s Do This! (Wednesday, 10-30-24)

Surgery day.

No food or drink/water since midnight.

Showered both last night and this morning with special antibacterial soap.

Dressed is very lose fitting clothes.

My wife drives me to the hospital for day surgery. We use the valet parking for one less thing to worry/think about. We work our way to the surgery floor, check in, and wait. Very nervously wait. It was clear I didn’t apply any underarm deodorant. Nervous sweating… thank goodness I was wearing a dark colored top.

Name called. Crutches activated. Pre-op room achieved. Nice nurses. IV started. It hurt a little… but good job! Loving the fact I can ‘joke’ with the nurses.

Boot removed… foot revealed.

Swelling. Still aches.

Visit from the anesthesiologist. Questions asked and answered. They leave.

The ortho surgeon arrives. Same questions asked and answered.

Time to wait.

About an hour later, the anesthesiologists return… I give my wife a kiss. Feeling ‘the burn’ as the propofol is being administered. I remember being wheeled out of the Pre-Op room heading to the OR… talking with the staff… the doors of the OR open… and I’m out.

Time: 11:45AM.

The next thing I remember… being told it’s around 3PM. In the recovery room. I fall back asleep. I casually wake up… told it’s 4PM. I’m having a tough time waking up… but I’m slowly gathering my ‘wits’.

Told surgery was a success. My wife comes into the recovery room and given the take home instructions.

5PM… Finally cleared recovery protocol… time to go home.

Recovery time starts NOW.

I’m terribly sorry this happened to you! But look how the Dr appt all the way to surgery just fell into place. I know you’ll be back running in no time since you are a motivated patient.

And yes, writing is extremely therapeutic. We journaled Jim’s entire journey with cancer on CaringBridge. The outpouring of love and support was truly unexpected and so very welcome.

I’m keeping you in my daily prayers of healing in all aspects as you navigate your recovery.
