What a Difference 6 Months Makes!  (Sunday, October 27, 2024 – April 27, 2025)

Sunday, April 27, 2025. I rolled out of bed as normal… and then it hit me… Today is April 27th… that’s exactly 6 months since October 27th: the day I ruptured my Achilles Tendon during a training run.

It’s been 6 months.

The rupture: October 27, 2024

The surgery: October 30, 2024.

The temporary non-weight bearing splint for 5 weeks. From October 30, 2024 to December 3, 2024.

I soon learned the word ‘crutches’ is a 4-letter word. (See previous posts on this subject.)

Followed by a ‘to the knee level’ leg cast- also non-weight bearing- for another 3 weeks: December 3, 2024 to December 19, 2024.

The walking boot: December 19, 2024 to January 7, 2025.

I remember the walking boot. I walked so much in that boot I dug a hole in the heel. I hated that boot…

Physical Therapy: January 7th to present

I have a very nice and knowledgeable physical therapist that has been very good to work with to get my right lower leg/ankle stronger and more flexible. I remember the first time I attempted a right ankle lift post walking boot. I attempted the lift… looked down… and nothing happened. I glanced over to my PT and said ‘I guess that’s the reason I’m here.’ (Let’s just say I can do more than an ankle lift now…)

Run Training:

Yesterday, as part of my RWR training for my October Half Marathon, I ran/walk 8 miles. When my rupture initially happened, my orthopedic surgeon openly stated I would not run for a minimum of 7-9 months post-surgery.

Today is 6 months post and I ran 8 miles yesterday. I RAN 8 MILES YESTERDAY!

I only began to run and train with the very explicit approval of both my orthopedic surgeon, and, more importantly, my wife.

I am slowly returning to my running form post-Achilles. And in the process, I have a path back to my happy place.

More normal… so nice!
