I’m Walkin’   (March 11, 2025)

There’s a classic song by Fats Domino entitled “I’m Walkin’”.

Some of the lyrics include:

“I’m walkin’, yes indeed, and I’m talkin’ ’bout you and me
I’m hopin’ that you’ll come back to me (yes)
I’m lonely as I can be, I’m waitin’ for your company
I’m hopin’ that you’ll come back to me”

As my recovery continues, I’ve slowly been released to do more ‘normal’ things. In this case… walking.

When my boot was removed in early January, I found my ability to stand steady and to smoothly walk to be initially very problematic. With the help of physical therapy and time, the strength in my right leg and ankle has been slowly returning back to somewhat a ‘normal’ state. (Not 100% normal, but getting there.)

Since I have not been released to run, my only other outlet to being mobile is to walk.

At first, walking just a few hundred feet was somewhat painful. Again, with time and physical therapy, this has changed for the better.

At present, I am walking over 3.5 miles relatively pain free. Yeah me!

I’ve never been known as a fast walker… and in my current recovery state, this is even more true.

I use the Nike Run APP on my phone to track my walks… the same APP I had been using to track my runs. (And once I’m able to run again, I’ll be using the same APP to track my runs.)

This walking ‘therapy’ had been a very humbling experience. Being forced into a relatively sedentary lifestyle since my late October 2024 injury/ruptured Achilles, I find myself starting literally from ‘training point 1’ again. This means teaching my body to again ‘be on my feet’ for a long period of time.

This is my new reality. But it’s a new reality definitely moving in the right direction.

Since my recovery is moving along very well, I hope to be released very soon to start running- albeit initially very limited. And I have just 225 days until my targeted half marathon comeback race in late October 2025.

In the meantime, I’m walkin’.
