December 25, 2024
I certainly wasn’t doing any math when they wheeled me into the OR to reattach my ruptured Achilles tendon back on October 30th. As it turns out, Wednesday, October 30th was exactly 8 weeks before Christmas.
Truth be known, time that I thought would have dragged along at a slower than a snail’s pace, has actually gone by at a fairly brisk pace. From the initial surgery to the post-surgery splint to the lower leg cast to now my walking boot, it certain has been a whirlwind.
I’ve traveled to visited several grandchildren during this time- both by car and plane.
I’ve started physical therapy and for once I will admit I’m actually following the prescribed PT program. (For those that know me, this is truly a WIN for me!)
I’ve started to volunteer with the Houston Marathon to help where they need me. As I was scheduled to pace their 3hour half marathon before my injury, volunteering at least makes me feel part of the team in my own way.
This past week, I volunteered to help ‘test scan’ bibs. The Houston Marathon has a policy of test scanning all bibs to make certain what the bib states is what the system shows. With tens of thousands of entrants- both at the full and half marathon events- the odds are there that someone’s bib information could have accidentally been ‘systematically dumped’.
There is literally a team of bib testers with all the many bib boxes spread amongst the volunteers.
It’s therefore a bittersweet irony that I happened upon my own bib.

The good news was it scanned perfectly! 😉
These past 8 weeks have truly been an emotional roller coaster of a not-so-fun ‘joy’ ride. The very good news remains in this very same statement… ‘past 8 weeks’.
With each passing day, I’m closer to more normal and the day I can return to running.
That’s the reason why this Christmas will be one of my best Christmases ever!
Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2025 and Beyond!
